Pica
Picas are used to define column widths when setting type. Picas are based on the point system of typography. 12 points equal one pica and one pica is approximately 1/6 of one inch.
PMT
Acronym for photomechanical transfer. PMTs are created using film negatives or positives and result in a high resolution, positive black and white image on permanent photographic paper. Logos and logotype are commonly converted into PMT for artwork and scanning purposes.
Point
Points are used to define vertical measurements of letterforms and spacing. Type sizes are defined in points. There are approximately 72 points in an inch.
PostScript
PostScript is the copyrighted term for Page Description Language owned by the Adobe Corporation. PostScript defines the outlines of letters and numbers, permitting limitless flexibility is type sizes, styles, shading, and placement on a page.
Pull-quote
Pull-quotes (also called out-quotes) are short phrases or sentences taken from body copy and emphasized by enlargement, boxing, or color background to highlight surrounding content.
Patch Material
Translucent or clear material covering windows. Made from plastic or paper
Peel & Seal
Term used for adhesive which is exposed by peeling away coated release paper. Will adhere without moisture
Point
In paper, a unit of thickness measuring one-thousandth of an inch
Printing
The choice of a printing process depends upon the size of the run, the complexity and quality of the camera ready art, the number of ink colors, the paper stock and the level of quality desired.
Pad printing
An artwork imprint method where a recessed surface is covered with ink. When the plate is wiped clean, ink remains in the recessed areas. A silicone pad then presses against the plate, pulls the ink out of the recesses, and presses it directly onto the product.
Paper Proof
An image, on paper, of the actual artwork to be applied, with color and size specifics is referred to as a paper proof and is utilized to ensure the artwork details have been accurately interpreted by the manufacturer.
PMS Color Match
Also referred to as an exact color match, a PMS color match takes place when a requested imprint color is not available as a standard imprint color from the manufacturer and the manufacturer must create the color in order to complete the order. An additional charge is applicable in almost all cases.
PMT
Standing for a photo mechanical transfer, a PMT is essentially a black and/or white photogragh of a logo or message from which screens etc. are produced for the actual imprinting process. Extra charges are applicable a PMT is not supplied with the order.
Production time
The period of time in business days (ie.- does not include weekends or holidays) that it takes to produce an imprinted order of promotional products, after the artwork has been approved.
Product Proof
A product proof is a sample of the actual product with the requested artwork applied in the method required. Costs normally include all artwork production plus product costs.
Photo Etching (Metal):
Process in which an illustration and/or copy is imprinted into metal, usually aluminum, by acid and then sealed by an anodizing process. This is popular for awards and plaques.
Plate:
An image carrier, rubber or metal which transfers the ink to the printing surface.
Point-of-Purchase Advertising (POP):
Advertising materials - displays, cards, etc. - which are placed within retail stores at the place where purchases are actually made.
Pre-Production Proof:
A product imprinted with the specified design and copy of an issued purchase order. Its purpose is to clarify the appearance of the product and the imprint prior to manufacturing.
Premium:
A product or service offered free or at a reduced price if the recipient performs some task, such as purchasing an item, meeting a sales quota, etc. Usually consumer-related.
Promotional Products:
Useful items that can be imprinted with the name of a company or individual and given free to the end user without obligation.
Puff Prints:
A screening process, using “puff inks.” After screening, the product is exposed to heat. A chemical additive in the ink will cause the ink to rise as it is heated to dry. This process must be used on a cotton weave material where the ink has something to latch on to. Therefore, it cannot be used on nylon. Used on wearables, such as caps and hats, T-shirts.
